Razor blades taken to Grovetown High
Two Grovetown High students took razor blades to school Tuesday.
At 9 a.m., a student gave school authorities a box cutter blade that was in his shoe. In class, the boy had taken off his shoe after feeling something in it, and saw the blade. He asked to go to the principal's office.
He told authorities that he recently used box cutter blades to cut boxes while moving. The authorities believed the student didn't mean to take the blade to school, but he will still undergo a disciplinary hearing. No charges were filed against the teen.
At 12:45 p.m., the school's public safety officer found a scraper containing a razor blade in an 18-year-old's purse left behind in the lunchroom. The officer found it while searching for identification.
The student said that she had used the scraper for the windows of her vehicle and forgotten it was in her purse.
Though an investigation revealed that she didn't intend to misuse the scraper's blade, she was suspended pending a school board hearing.
Man chased down
A Martinez man with two warrants for his arrest was taken into custody Monday after running from police.
Dennis Murray Jr., 29, of the 200 block of Oak Court, was charged with obstruction of an officer.
Police saw Murray walking behind Lowe's in Martinez about 9 p.m. and asked for identification. Murray didn't provide identification and mumbled when the deputy asked his name.
The deputy told Murray that several businesses had been broken into and that the man looked suspicious walking behind the shopping center at night. When the officer went to get his note pad, Murray ran. He was caught behind his house on Oak Court.
Murray was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond for police in Richmond County and California.
Students in fights
Two fights involving Evans High students broke out Tuesday at the school on Cox Road.
At 7:15 a.m., two students fought after two girls called another student a derogatory name. The student reacted by grabbing and pushing one of the girls, and they fought until stopped by teachers and administrators.
Both girls were released to their parents.
At 12:15 p.m., three students were involved in a fight that started with pushing.
A student pushed Desmond Gerrard Hughes, 17, into a student who was arguing with Hughes. As they argued, Hughes pushed the student and was pushed back.
Hughes hit the student several times in the head. The fight was broken up by administrators and the school's public safety officer. One student started to fight with the school's officer as he was pulled away.
Hughes was charged with affray and taken to the Columbia County Detention Center, where he was released Tuesday on a $1,100 bond. A second student was charged with affray and obstruction of a school safety officer and sent to the Regional Youth Detention Center. A third was charged with simple battery and released to his mother.
The names of the two other students involved in the fight were not released by police because of their age.
2 pit bulls stolen
Someone broke into a Harlem woman's property in the 6200 block of Otis Way on Monday and took her two pit bull terriers and dog-related items.
She said that when she came home at 1:15 p.m. she realized her dogs, dog houses and fencing from the backyard were missing.
The rear door, frame and dead bolt were damaged.
