Special events help celebrate schools ' nutrition programs

By Donnie Fetter
News Editor

Columbia County school lunchrooms combined sports with food to celebrate National School Lunch Week.

Held each year during the second full week of October, National School Lunch Week celebrates the school food program, said Jane Wiggins, the county's director of School Nutrition Services.

"We invited parents to come eat at the school," Wiggins said. "Every year, we have a different theme. This year, it's All-Star School Lunch, which is a sports theme."

Some schools asked area soccer players to sign balls to hand out during lunch, and in previous years high school football players have volunteered to serve lunches in elementary schools, Wiggins said.

"The kids really get a big kick out of that," she said. "Those older kids are like their heroes."

Euchee Creek Elementary held school board members and other school officials as lunch servers last week.

"They love it," Wiggins said. "It's really a lot of fun. They love to show off their cooking skills for parents.

"It's really a good public relations thing we can do with the parents."
