Grovetown man arrested after two-hour standoff
A Grovetown man surrendered to police early Tuesday after breaking into his estranged wife's house on Hereford Farm Road and threatening her with a gun.
Police say James Carswell, 61, of the 1100 block of Dodge Lane, used an ax to break the front-door glass and force his way into the residence just before midnight Monday.
After her home alarm went off, Cheryl Carswell, 61, told police she ran out the garage door and to the front of the home, where he pointed an Uzi at her and threatened to kill her as she fled in his truck, which he had left running in the driveway.
She drove to a nearby convenience store and called police.
Deputies found a loaded revolver, two Uzi magazines and a case of 9 mm ammunition on the front seat of the truck.
When police arrived to investigate the house alarm at her home, they found Carswell armed with a rifle, which he aimed at police and threatened to shoot them. After a standoff that lasted less than two hours, he surrendered.
He then complained of chest pains and was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.
Carswell was arrested after being released from the hospital and has been charged with obstruction of police, Capt. Morris said. He is being held without bond at the Columbia County Detention Center.
Young intruder awakens resident in his bedroom
A Martinez man called police late Tuesday after he woke up and found an intruder in his bedroom.
The 61-year-old said that just before 10:30 p.m. a noise woke him from sleep and he saw a youth in his bedroom looking in his top dresser drawer.
When the youth realized the resident was awake he fled through an open back window.
The man said that he had left the window open and that the screen had been cut. Nothing appeared to be missing from the home.
Mailbox whitewashed by vandal's can of paint
A Harlem man said Wednesday that someone used a can of paint to damage his mailbox.
The vandal knocked his mailbox off the support post with a gallon can of paint. The can appeared to have been thrown from a moving vehicle.
White paint covered the mailbox and was all over the road.

Sunday alcohol sale leads to arrest of store's owner
The owner of a Grovetown store was arrested May 3 after police accused him of selling alcohol without a license on a Sunday.
A Grovetown Department of Public Safety investigator used a confidential informant to buy a 12-pack of Budweiser from El Primo Store, 603 Katherine St., about 12:20 p.m.
Owner Jose Alberti, 50, of Augusta, was charged with selling alcohol without a license and selling alcohol on Sunday. He was released from the city jail after posting a $320 bond, according to department personnel.
Mailbox is damaged by sledgehammer vandal
A Grovetown woman told police that someone used a sledgehammer to damage her mailbox April 28.
The 43-year-old said her mailbox was knocked off its support post during the night.
The sledgehammer was left near the mailbox.
